THE SERIOUS DANGER OF LOSING YOUR SPIRITUAL ANOINTING AND POWER

Spiritual or Holy Ghost anointing is the coming together of the supernatural and the natural so that the natural can operate supernaturally in the natural realm of events. It is the ‘Holy Ghost Unction’ that enables us to function at the ultimate or supernatural level of spiritual and human actions. Anointing ‘possibilizes’ our human impossibilities by the supreme power of He who makes all things possible [Lk.1:37]. Anointing and divine power are sometimes synonymous for divine anointing goes with divine power. Hence, the scripture tells us that when the Holy Spirit- the anointer- comes upon us, we shall receive divine power [Acts1:8, see also Lk.24:48-49].

In Hebrew and Greek languages the terms for power are ‘Koach’, and ‘Dunamis’ respectively, which literally means ‘force’. As energy power, can be in any of these forms: Atomic Power, Chemical Power, Thermal Power, Magnetic Power or Electrical Power.  These are different forms of energy operating in the universe, which were created by God and are discovered by man through science. It is important to note that cosmic powers which are imbued energy in the universe or cosmos have their origin from God.  But, unfortunately some people resort to these powers as the ultimate power, especially those in certain occult systems that seek for occult powers or diabolic powers.
All good powers proceed from God and derive their potency from him. There is no good power in existence, which did not gain its origin from God. Even the power   the devil  exercises wrongly and wickedly now  was originally given to him by  God, pure and good, which got corrupted after his costly disobedience to God,  rebellion and  fall from glory and eventually became one of the  greatest instruments  he uses in  afflicting the fallen and disobedient humanity.

In   Eph. 6:12, we learn from St. Paul that there are principalities and power(s). Take note: St. Paul does not say ‘power’ but ‘’powers’’. Since there are ‘powers’, there should be the greatest of all these powers, which we refer to here as the ‘ultimate power’. This is ‘The Power’ that controls all these other ‘powers’. What we are talking about here is not just any kind of power, but the supernatural or ultimate power from the Almighty God. This power is supreme and incomparable. It is far above any other power and comes to us from above- that is, the throne of God [Lk.24:49, Acts1:8, Lk.1:35].

In Acts10:38, the scripture informs us of the secret of Jesus’ great exploit in soul winning during his earthly ministry: “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with Holy Spirit and power; he went about doing good and healing all who were under the devil’s power”. From this text, we are meant to understand that Jesus was able to do good/great works and heal those under the power of the devil because of divine anointed upon his life. The Holy Spirit was responsible for this anointing and power with which Jesus accomplished his redemptive mission.

The scripture says that after his baptism, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. This desert journey and exercise was meant to enable Jesus prepare for his mission. The scripture says equally in Lk.4:14 that after this preparatory spiritual exercise, Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the spirit and the news about him spread through the whole countryside.  It shows that there was a remarkable difference in the works and words of Jesus after his anointing and endowment with divine power; for the scripture says that the news about him spread through the whole countryside. This goes to confirm what the scripture says in Acts 10:38 that Jesus went about doing good, which might have made the news about him to spread like wild fire. Another interesting revelation in Acts 10:38 is that the anointing and power Jesus received enabled him to heal all who were under the devil’s power. It implies that without such anointing and power Jesus would not have confronted Satan’s power, let alone healed all that were under his power. Anointing enables us to have spiritual dominion over demons and challenging circumstances of life.
Have you now realized the importance of anointing and divine power in the work of God, especially for soul winning? Are you still in doubt that Satan targets, above all else, the spiritual anointing and power of anyone who does the work of God, especially the important work of soul winning?  The truth is that Satan would not bother much about anybody who does the work of God, especially the work of winning souls for the kingdom of God, without the anointing of the Holy Spirit and his divine power. The reason is this: He knows that such a person, empty of spiritual  anointing and divine power, cannot heal or deliver those under his power; for his yoke can only be broken by the anointing(Isa.10:27).

The actual jar that contains this precious and costly ‘spiritual oil’( divine anointing)  is the human heart. But when the devil is allowed to have access to this jar, in spite of the warning in Eph.4:27 not to give him a chance, he would attempt not only to take absolute  control of it, but also to steal, destroy or pollute its precious and costly content(the divine anointing). If the devil is allowed to pollute or contaminate this jar, he will not stop at that, but will ensure that he also pollutes, contaminates or if possible, steal its content (the divine anointing). Hence the scripture strongly enjoins us to guard, above all else, our heart for it is the well spring of life [Prov.4:23]. It is from this spiritual jar(the human heart) that the spring of living water Jesus told the Samaritan woman and the Jews about wells up to eternal life[Jn.4:14, Jn.7:37-39].

Samson was extraordinarily strong and powerful because of his consecration to God and special anointing from him. But he was lustful, careless, and presumptuous, which made him to lose not only his consecration and anointing but also his life in the hands of his enemies- the Philistines. Therefore be at alert!
Although the anointing will cost you everything, it is worth preserving. Some have had it, but lost it with great regret. Some have been robbed of it through drunkenness, lust, sexual immorality, greed, gluttony, earthly power, ‘secret sins’ and carnality in worship and service, which amount to mixing the lustful demands of the flesh with the glory of God. These sins have sapped or robbed many of their hard earned sweet and glorious anointing of the Holy Spirit. It cannot be overemphasized that all manner of sexual sins like fornication, adultery, masturbation, lust, homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, incest, prostitution, pornography, sexual impurity are sins that speedily and instantly destroy the glorious anointing of the Holy Spirit in one’s life.

The following are the consequences of loss of spiritual power or unction: (1)Loss of impact and result, (2)Personal captivity and bondage: Anytime you lose your anointing or spiritual oil, you are connected to chain(Judges 16:19-21, 1Sam.10:1, 10-13, 1Sam16:14,  Isam.18:10) (3)Generational or family captivity: Because of sin of unfaithfulness and idolatry, Israel was subjected to captivity in different eras in the hands of different foreign rulers after the death of Moses and Joshua, their easier delivers (Judges 3:7-8, 12-14, Judges 4:1-3, Judges 6:1-6, Judges10:6-9, Judges13:1). After each captivity, when Israel cried out to the him, God sent rescuer or deliverer in the persons of Othniel(Judges 3:10-11) Ehud(Judges 3:15), Deborah(Judges 4:4-24), Gideon(Judges 6:1-14), Jephthah(Judges 11:1-10), then Samson(Judges 13:2-24). After Samson, there was no rescuer or leader until the time of King Saul. Because of the vacuum in leadership everybody did as he pleased (Judges 21:25) (4) The life of shame and ridicule(1Sam.17:16, Judges16:27).

We should, therefore, carefully keep guard over our hearts or else some earthly considerations would cause us to lose their most important content- the sweet and glorious anointing of the Holy Spirit. Our attention should always be on our hearts where our anointing is. But If your attention is not where your anointing is, Satan will soon pollute your anointing by polluting your heart [Matt. 13:25, Matt.15:18-20] or steal your anointing by stealing your heart [Rev.3:11, Jn.10:10, Heb.12:15-17 Matt. 24:43, Matt. 12:29, 1Thess. 5:3].
